Abstrak

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder caused by bacterial colonization, particularly Cutibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Prolonged use of topical antibiotics may lead to resistance, highlighting the need for safe and effective natural alternatives. The bark of Syzygium polyanthum contains bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial effects. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from S. polyanthum bark against acne-causing bacteria. The bark was extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol. Phytochemical screening was performed using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), while antibacterial assays included bacterial screening, determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), and agar diffusion using paper discs. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, and phenolics. The extract exhibited significant antibacterial activity against C. acnes, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis, with MIC values of 0.4%, 0.8%, and 0.2%, respectively, and MBC values of 0.8%, 1.6%, and 0.4%. The largest inhibition zone was observed against S. epidermidis. These findings suggest that S. polyanthum bark ethanol extract holds strong potential as a natural topical antiacne agent
